57 IRELAND - The Quiet, The Green, The Clean Empty Waves

Sunshine. Light off-shore
wind. 3’ waves peeling through the river mouth. Four of us in.
Much like de Botton’s view of
Amsterdam I
want to live the life this place implies. It seems that the trappings of modern
Westernized existence are a decade away from here.
For me Ireland is reminiscent of Ravilious’ Devon lanes
and Miller’s Greece,
an idealized romantic view that in reality is but a dream. Fishing, as the
image of Caroline will no doubt convey is one of relative solitude and quiet.
The reality couldn’t be further from the truth. To begin we were happy enough
by ourselves but within a few minutes of casting out a group of young men drove
out onto the harbour, parked and proceeded to inflict what can only be
described as painful Euro-pop out into the ether. The gulls took flight whilst
we were trapped determined not to be pushed out of our spot.

The wind has changed so now
we wait.
Good fortune today. We have
kindly been given access to a holiday home for a day. Thank you, words that do
not express our gratitude enough.
An objective aspect of
goodness
This aspect, for Vernon, relates to where
we are going in life over what we do, it is about our view of life beyond our
own immediate concerns rather than be about our feelings.
In holding such an objective
view of goodness Vernon
states we alongside everything else are able to flourish.

Today’s a day. The surf this
morning was rubbish or rather I had a rubbish surf. I was sat in the wrong
place. The state of tide meant that the main peak stopped working whilst the
left just across from the river was firing; fast sections broke over shallow
rocks. The guys who paddled out to it seemed to stroke into wave after wave
whilst myself and some others sat waiting, hoping a set would appear. It’s also
raining and so slightly depressing. Caroline cheers me up though. When I’m down
she still manages to raise a smile. She has made this trip, more than she will
ever know. Today we have been together for a year.
