On Anticipation
Making things beautiful is
easy because as Sontag points out, suggesting that ugliness has never been
discovered through photographs. This is due to the fact that for the most what
moves people to take photographs is the discovery of something beautiful. This
notion of making a beautiful picture by photographing something beautiful is, I
feel, further enhanced by digital photography and manipulation.
One of the reasons the Dutch
Post-Impressionist painter Van Gogh (1853-1890) moved to Arles, France was because he wanted other
people to see the place through his work thus opening the eyes of others. This
faith in his work is something I can relate to in wanting people to see the
world, not in some idealized, romanticised sunset but to the shit on our
beaches and throughout our coastlines.
