On Anticipation
Van Gogh was not interested
in realism per se. His interest was in a realism of a deeper sort, a realism
that was not literal but nevertheless revealed truths. However, Van Gogh, like
other painters of reality selected and highlighted what features they
themselves deemed valuable. As de Botton posits a landscape can become more
desirable once it is seen through the eyes of a great artist but this process
of selection is often conveyed as romantic and idealistic. Standing on the
beach at Croyde engulfed in the spectrum of a setting sun is often tainted by
the amount of plastic that resides amongst the rock pools, seaweed and sand.
