57 IRELAND - The Quiet, The Green, The Clean Empty Waves

Saturday, 22nd September, 2012

Easkey, Sligo

Sunshine. Light off-shore wind. 3’ waves peeling through the river mouth. Four of us in.

Much like de Botton’s view of Amsterdam I want to live the life this place implies. It seems that the trappings of modern Westernized existence are a decade away from here.

For me Ireland is reminiscent of Ravilious’ Devon lanes and Miller’s Greece, an idealized romantic view that in reality is but a dream. Fishing, as the image of Caroline will no doubt convey is one of relative solitude and quiet. The reality couldn’t be further from the truth. To begin we were happy enough by ourselves but within a few minutes of casting out a group of young men drove out onto the harbour, parked and proceeded to inflict what can only be described as painful Euro-pop out into the ether. The gulls took flight whilst we were trapped determined not to be pushed out of our spot.
